Baby Chicks! April 19, 2009

Posted by Amy in Chicks.

Yes, that baby chick in the Easter basket belonged to me!  I’m now the proud mama of 4 new babies.  2 Rhode Island Red’s, and 2 White Rocks.  We picked up these girls (supposed to be girls… we’ll see) last weekend at a flea market.  We happened to be there when the owner was packing up to go, and he still had hundreds of baby chicks left, so he was basically giving them to anyone who wanted  them.  At the time, they were only 4 days old, and had spent 2 out of those 4 days living in a crowded cardboard box, outside in 60 degree weather without adequate food and water.  I felt so bad for these little babies, so I decided to bring them home.   They are now a little over a week old and doing well!  One of the whites is starting to get tail feathers!

I’ve found myself spending hours reading at the backyard chickens website.  Like now, at 3 a.m. when I have insomnia.  I’m planning my chicken coop.  I’ve found a lot of great ideas so far.  I just need something simple, although I do find myself lusting over the pictures of the huge play houses some have for their chicks.

Did I mention that it is 3 a.m. and I’m reading about chickens?  Sleep is desperately needed.

Aww! I really want a pair of backyard chickens! But it’s against the HOA here. 😦
